Doula Care with Patricia Rohlfs
Working with birthing families is a true source of joy for me. Since 2006, I have had the opportunity to support many lovely families in Vancouver as their Birth doula and/or Birthing from within Prenatal Instructor. I feel blessed and amazed to be witnessing over and over again how birth unfolds, how birthing women are strong, and how new parents are born as their little one comes into the world. It is normal, it is magic. It is mystery.
As often the case, I discovered doula care through my personal journey giving birth to our two wonderful children. My family doctor opened my eyes to the possibility of being an active participant in birth, to explore what was right for me. He helped me understand that birth is a normal, healthy part of life and introduced us to doula care.
Now working as a doula myself, I have the pleasure to share some of what I have learned. The way I work is very fluid. Like the ice-cream that melts on the pie and fills the cracks, I tune into what is happening and do what is needed in order to support you both in the moment. A back rub, a sip of water, setting a positive birth environment, teaching a pain coping practice, whispering words of encouragement and reassurance, helping with specific positions, communicating with other birth team members, using a rebozo... possibilities are infinite! I bring experience, confidence, warmth and professionalism to the families I work with and I hold a profound trust in the birth process. I also love working with partners to enhance their presence at the birth. There is a wide variety of ways to support at a birth. Whether your partner wants to be the main support person or sees him/herself running around doing practical things, I can provide suggestions and insights to help him/her be there to their level of comfort.
I am comfortable working with midwives and family doctors alike, at home or in the hospital. I have experience with water birth and VBAC, diverse families, bilingual families, teen and single moms. I am also a post-partum doula and breastfeeding counsellor. I grew up in Europe and am happy to bring cultural-sensitive doula care to a birth. I speak English and French fluently and have good notions of German.
